Butterfly Survey

We undertake butterfly surveys following the United Kingdom Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS) methodology, which includes a modified fixed-route transects (Pollard Walks) or reduced effort surveys for single species. Butterfly surveys maybe undertaken between the beginning of April to the end of September; however, surveys must be timed correctly for any target species flying period, for example dingy skipper adult flying period in England is mid-May to mid-July.

Fixed-route transects

The transect aims to cover the various habitat types and management activity within the site. All butterflies are recorded within a 5m band width are recorded and care is taken not to record  behind a surveyor as to not double record. Surveys are undertaken between 10:45 and 15:45 during optimal weather conditions.
