The thermal imaging footage shows brown long-eared bats in flight and resting on the ridge board and rafters within a barn that supports a day roost. The location of the site is in rural North Yorkshire and was filmed by Adrian George from FALCO Ecology in August 2019.
Brown long-eared bats often roost within loft voids and buildings where they can fly around before emerging out of a building. This species likes to emerge after dark when light levels are low to avoid predation. Furthermore they echolocate very quietly, therefore they can be easily missed by surveyors using just bat detectors.
The thermal imaging camera (Pulsar Helion XP38) was positioned within the barn to identify the number of individuals within the roost and locate where these roost locations are situated within the barn. One bat emerged from above the ridge beam and a further three from the end of a purlin within the wall cavity.
The thermal imaging and infrared cameras were a vital tool in accurately accessing how the bats use the surveyed building.
